The Trousseau

The concept of the "trousseau" (the gifts a bride brings to her groom in marriage) has pretty well gone out of fashion nowadays. So - as it is such a lovely evocative word - we have taken the liberty to appropriate it for something for which no word seems to exist in English, namely the gifts a bride receives in preparation for her wedding, typically at a bridal shower.

There is a connection, actually: The custom of the bridal shower is said to have grown out of earlier dowry practices, for example, when a father refused to give his daughter her dowry because he did not approve of the marriage. In such a situation, friends of the woman would gather together and bring gifts that would compensate for the dowry and allow her to marry the man of her choice. The frequently quoted legend of St Nicolas (Santaklaus) traces the origin of this practice to sixteenth century Holland and there are also parallels with the Glory Box or Hope Chest (Trousseau) custom in the US and Australia (adapted from Wikipedia).

Our 'Trousseau' is the set of gifts you receive immediately after you have placed an order for the Calèche Online gown of your choice and have paid the Initial Deposit. Your Deposit and our Trousseau act not only as a foundation for the mutually trusting relationship we hope to develop with you, it is also intended to ensure that the Calèche gown you receive from us in a few months' time will be everything you expect of it.

Your Trousseau contains -

  • a Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000, a 2-megapixel Web Camera with superb Carl Zeiss optics and an RRP of $ 149,

The provision of a top-of-the-line Web Camera is a unique feature of the Calèche Online Bridal Boutique. The aim of giving you a Logitech Pro 9000 Quickcam (one of the best Web Cameras currently on the market) is to get as close as we can - in the circumstances - to the kind of personal interaction brides have in a bricks-and-mortar bridal shop like the Calèche Bridal House. It enables us to get to know each other through face-to-face (literally) interaction.

One of the most important functions of the Web Camera is going to be the essential one of allowing us to make sure that your measurements are the right ones for the gown you have selected: we want you to arrange for your measurements to be taken in front of the Web Camera by someone you feel comfortable with, while the design consultant assigned to you supervises and guides the process.

  • a set of actual samples of the fabrics used in the gown you have ordered,

  • a colour photograph of your gown,

  • a copy of the Calèche Online Measurement Chart, and

  • a copy of the relevant Calèche Online Colour Chart.
